Curry College Softball - Fall 2019 Summary

Curry College Softball - Fall 2019 Summary

The Curry College softball program participated in the Albertus Magnus College fall playdate on Saturday, September 28 in New Haven, Conn. The Colonels played their three fall games as allowed by the NCAA for their non-traditional season. This overnight trip was an excellent team bonding experience.

They matched up well against the 2019 GNAC Champion and NCAA participant University of St. Joseph.  The Colonels hung tough throughout the game, but ended up on the short end of a 4-2 score. In game two, Curry jumped out to 5-0 lead against the Coast Guard Academy, but the Bears rallied in their final at-bat to edge the Colonels, 6-5. Game three was against the host Albertus Magnus. A slow start to the game produced a 6-1 victory for the host team. Families were the MVP's of the day as they brought some amazing food to feed the team between the second and third games.

The coaching staff is excited about the effort from the day. They want to see this level of play continued into the spring season.  As you know, the Lady Colonels open their Spring 2020 campaign in Ft. Myers, Florida in March with a ten-game slate. Come see a game!

The Softball Team wins the 21st Alumni Softball Game

The Curry College softball program held its 21st Alumni game on Sunday, October 6. There were 13 softball alumni who returned to the diamond ready for action. The span of years for the alumni present ranged from the class of 1998 to our most recent 2019 graduate.

The alumni squad would produce six hits throughout the game but were held scoreless. Here are the players who had the hits for the alumni team: current Assistant Coach Marissa Bruno '17, current scorekeeper Maria Sancinito '06, Mikayla Lambert '18, and Ariel LaRosa '15. LaRosa had a solid 3-for-3 day at the plate for the alumni squad. The pitching duties for the current team were nicely handled by Cara Costello '21, Taylor Newcomb '21, and Camryn Willis '23. The solid pitching efforts of Becca Black '18 and Mikayla Lambert '18, kept the alumni team in the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, the current team put together three hits and scored the lone run of the game.  Leading the way for the Colonels in that inning were Jordan Perzan '21, Madison Schwartz '23 and Camryn Willis '23. It was quite the day for Willis as she picked up the win on the mound and had the lone, game-winning RBI.

It was a reunion of former Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) All-Star players and members of the Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame. Michelle Maiocca Belmonte '98 and Leanne Tarkanian '00 handled the humor for the day keeping a smile on everyone's face. Coach Weckworth was also glad to have Liz Londergan '00, Bethanie Raposa Ferguson, '05, Joneiha Veiga '13, Jessica Saluti '18, and Talia Forte '19 back on the field. It certainly was an exciting game with plenty of laughs as well. A postgame pizza picnic for about 100 people was held at the field to wrap up the day.  Our current parents organized the postgame picnic and there was no shortage of food.  Special thanks goes out to them!

The Curry College softball program would like to thank all the players who made it back for this great day of softball and would like to invite you to attend some of our games in the spring. Perhaps one more Spring Break Trip to Ft. Myers, Florida would do the trick. If you were unable to make it to the Alumni Game this year, plan on joining us next year. It's a really good time!
