MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader to visiting Salve Regina University on Friday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Seahawks took the opening game 9-0 in five innings and then edged the Colonels 5-3 in the nightcap.
The wins move Salve Regina to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the CCC while Curry evens up at 8-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Game One – Salve Regina 9, Curry 0 (5 innings)
The Seahawks jumped on the scoreboard early in the opening game. After a leadoff double from senior Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) to begin the second inning, sophomore Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) stepped to the plate and homered to right field to give Salve Regina the 2-0 advantage.
Garrigan continued her strong game in the third frame with another home run, this time a three-run shot to left field, which plated Riley and freshman Nikki Vanelli (Quakertown, Pa.) to push the score to 5-0.
The visitors tacked on four more in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-0. Senior Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) opened the offense in the inning with a single up the middle. Junior Maddie Machado (Westport, Mass.) followed with a walk and then Vanelli rocketed a homer to left center. The Seahawks plated one more on a single to right by Garrigan, which scored Riley.
Sophomore Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H.) picked up the win in the circle, tossing a complete five innings and only allowing three hits. She walked two and fanned six in the victory.
Sophomore Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) was tagged with the loss for the Colonels. She went five innings while surrendering nine runs on 10 hits. She walked two and struck out one in the defeat.
Garrigan had an impressive day at the dish, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two home runs, six runs batted in, and two runs scored. Riley also finished game one 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Freshman Liana Duarte (Taunton, Mass.), sophomore Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.), and freshman Alexis Buckner (Foxborough, Mass.) each tallied one hit for Curry.
Game Two – Salve Regina 5, Curry 3
Salve Regina got on the board in the first inning on a single to left field by Vanelli, which scored Florent from third. Senior Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) followed with a base hit to center to plate Vanelli from third to go up 2-0.
The Colonels began the second frame with back-to-back hits to put two aboard. Lloyd singled to right field and then freshman Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) doubled to right cent to send Lloyd to third. Buckner drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center, which plated Lloyd.
The Seahawks responded with a single tally in the fourth to expand the lead to 3-1. Sophomore Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) grounded out to third with two on to score freshman Kendal Duprey (Cranston, R.I.)
Curry knotted the score in the fifth on a two-RBI double to left center by junior Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.), which scored Duarte and sophomore Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.).
Salve Regina had the final answer as they plated two runs in the top of the seventh. Kathios doubled to right center to score Garrigan and Riley to jump out in front 5-3.
The Colonels had one final shot at tying the contest in the home half of the seventh inning. Junior Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) got the rally started with a single up the middle. Sophomore Allison May (West Bridgewater, Mass.) drew a walk to put two on. Dimond converted a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, but a groundout and a fly out ended the contest and comeback attempt for Curry.
Kathios paced the Seahawks with three hits while Vanelli and Florent tallied two. Five different Colonels had one hit in the nightcap.
Nelson picked up her second win of the day in the circle, lasting two and a third innings. She only allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out two.
May was credited with the loss, going six and a third. She allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out one and walking one.
Curry will return to action on Saturday, March 30 at the University of New England in a conference doubleheader beginning at noon. Salve Regina hosts Endicott for a conference doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
