FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Curry College softball team split a doubleheader with non-conference opponents Edgewood and Wilmington (Ohio). The Eagles topped the Colonels 7-6 in extra innings in the first game while Curry defeated the Quakers, 4-1 in the second game of the day. Curry improves to 1-3 overall while Edgewood and Wilmington (Ohio) move to 2-10 and 0-6, respectively.
GAME ONE
Curry got on the board in the first inning, thanks to a two-RBI double to left from Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.), which drove in Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) and Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.).
The Colonels added one to their lead in the third as Lambert singled to the Edgewood shortstop. The hit was deep enough to score Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to go up 3-0.
With a three run deficit, the Eagles would pull within one on a two run homer from Grace Delleman (La Grange, Ill.). Edgewood claimed the lead in the fourth following a sacrifice fly from Sabrina Luedtke (Manitowoc, Wis.) and an RBI double by Sarah Elliott (Beloit, Wis.).
This back-and-forth contest swayed back in favor of Curry in the sixth. Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) flied out to center with two on. The play scored Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.). Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) would score later in the frame on a passed ball to knot the game at five.
The contest headed into extras and Curry drew first blood to reclaim the lead. Bruno singled to center to score Lynch to move ahead, 6-5. But the Eagles would have a shot in the bottom of the eighth. After Jordan Anderson (Munster, Ind.) reached on an error by the Colonels shortstop, Elizabeth Soter (Fall River, Wis.) was able to score to tie the contest up as she scored on the same play.
The game would end when Alyssa Hickey (Friendship, Wis.) reached on an error by the Curry third baseman, which allowed Anderson to score to give Edgewood the 7-6 victory in extra innings.
Bruno led Curry going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in. Five other Colonels pitched in one hit each to close the offensive output.
Shannon Whitmus (Verona, Wis.) picked up the win for the Eagles, going the distance. She gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking six. Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) was credited with the loss. She tossed two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs and striking out one.
GAME TWO
Wilmington tallied the initial run in the contest when Mariyah Burkhardt (Springfield, Ohio) grounded out to second base which drove in Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, Ohio) in the first inning.
Curry tied the contest on an RBI fly out by Korona. The ball was deep enough to score Morgan Borgardus.
Curry would add to their lead in the the top of the sixth when Byrd stepped to the plate. She singled to center, which brought in Korona to give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage.
Byrd and Korona paced Curry in game two with three hits each. Bruno and Lambert added two while Horn and Borgardus chipped in one each.
Black picked up the win in the circle, tossing a complete game and giving up one run on eight hits.
Curry will next play Tuesday against Nazareth and Marian (Wis.) at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively in Fort Myers, Fla.
