Softball Captures Opener, 3-2, but Drops Nightcap, 8-3, Against Visiting Salve Regina

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College took the first game of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader by topping visiting Salve Regina University 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Seahawks then bounced back to capture the nightcap, 8-3.

GAME ONE

Both teams were quiet offensively through a good portion of the game with Salve not recording a hit until the second and the Colonels not until fourth.

In the top half of the sixth, the Seahawks broke the scoreless tie with freshman Kristen Hickey (Hyde Park N.Y.) sacrifice flying out to left field scoring freshman Taylor Parry (Quincy, Mass.) who pinch ran for sophomore Kara O'Riley (Acton, Mass.) after she doubled to left and advanced to third on classmate Lexi Soucie's (North Easton, Mass.) bunt to the third baseman. Soucie would later be brought home after freshman Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) reached on a bunt.

After only letting up one hit defensively, Salve was leading 2-0 going into the seventh. However, the lead wouldn't last for very long as the Colonels started a comeback. The bases were loaded after sophomore Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) doubled, and senior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) followed with a single advancing Bruno to third. Sophomore Kelly Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) would follow with a walk bringing up freshman Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) who would double to right field clearing the bases and ending the game for Curry in the seventh inning.

Senior Taylor Ahern (Salem, Mass.) took the win for the Colonels, pitching a complete game giving up 12 hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Junior Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.) was handed the loss hurling six innings giving up six hits and three earned with one walk and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader had a little more offense and it started early. In the home half of the first, Curry jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Bruno singling to left and scoring freshman April Adams (Burlington, Mass.) who singled herself on a bunt to the left side.

Salve would respond with a run of its own with Soucie and Hickey both reaching in their first at bats of the game. Soucie would be tagged out at second on Hickey's hit, but sophomore Skye Hart (Hope Valley, R.I.) would double and score Hickey bringing the game back to a tie.

During their following at bats in the top half of the third, the Seahawks would get three more runs to jump ahead. Sophomore Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.) started things up with a walk and would be brought around with a double off the bat of junior Genevieve Benoit (Swampscott, Mass.) to left field. O'Riley would follow with a double of her own and traded places with Benoit putting Salve up by two. Hickey would double in O'Riley for another run in the inning and making the score 4-1 after two and a half.

The Colonels would get two runs back in the fourth with Bruno starting things with a walk this time. LaRosa followed her with a home run and Curry was only down 4-3 after four full innings.

The Seahawks would get the bats going yet again in the following half inning, exploding for four more insurance runs. After Benoit doubled and O'Riley walked, Hickey followed with a single bringing in Benoit. Sophomore Lauren Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.) would bring in O'Riley and Soucie with a single to center field. Fountain would later score after Galeazzi singled to center and the scoring would end there for the rest of the game.

The final score came to 8-3 in favor of Salve Regina and sophomore Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) went the distance and recorded the win giving up three earned on four hits three walks and seven strikeouts. Freshman Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) took the loss only going two and two thirds innings giving up four earned on seven hits, walking and striking out one respectively.

The Seahawks improve to 17-15 overall at the end of the day and 10-4 in the conference. They will travel to Endicott College for another CCC doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. After the split, the Colonels are 11-14 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
