BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Ariel LaRosa and Kelly Duggan combined to drive in 11 runs as Curry College claimed both games of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader against the University of New England on Saturday (Apr. 18) at Claude Dubois Field. The Colonels took the opener in five innings, 10-1, and finished with a 6-1 decision.
Curry improves to 10-13 (7-7 CCC) on the year, while the Nor'easters drop to 16-15 (8-6 CCC).
April Adams led the visitors with five hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 performance in the seconds contest. Both LaRosa (5 RBI) and Duggan (6 RBI) posted multiple-hit outings over the course of the twinbill, featuring one home run apiece. Taylor Ahearn went the distance (12 innings) in the circle, registering nine strikeouts against two walks and scattering 12 hits that amounted to two earned runs.
For UNE, Abby Lambert, Cat Ouellette, and Mollie Bartles recorded hits in each match.
Curry began fast in GAME 1, plating three runs with two gone in the top of the 1st. Duggan knocked in a pair with a double to center and scored on a single up the middle by Kevi Oatway.
A hit-by-pitch, bunt single, and single into shallow left-center loaded the bases for the Colonels in the 2nd, before a strikeout and popout set the stage for LaRosa to crush a grand slam deep over the fence in left-center. Duggan followed with another double, but was stranded in a 7-0 lead.
The Nor'easters got on the board in the 3rd as Ouellette singled through the left side to start the inning, then stole second base with two outs, and came around to score on a single through the right side by Amanda Vallante.
There was a runner on second and one away in the Curry 5th when Jessica Saluti put an RBI-double into the left-center gap for her second hit. The second out and a walk preceeded the second double of the game for Mikayla Lambert, which this time drove in two.
LaRosa and Saluti each scored twice for the Colonels. Ahearn leveled off her personal ledger at 6-6 with the five-inning win.
Sara Pelkey took the loss for UNE in two innings of work. Katelyn Austin notched five strikeouts in relief.
