Softball Dominates in Road Doubleheader Sweep at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Ariel LaRosa and Kelly Duggan combined to drive in 11 runs as Curry College claimed both games of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader against the University of New England on Saturday (Apr. 18) at Claude Dubois Field. The Colonels took the opener in five innings, 10-1, and finished with a 6-1 decision.

Curry improves to 10-13 (7-7 CCC) on the year, while the Nor'easters drop to 16-15 (8-6 CCC).

April Adams led the visitors with five hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 performance in the seconds contest. Both LaRosa (5 RBI) and Duggan (6 RBI) posted multiple-hit outings over the course of the twinbill, featuring one home run apiece. Taylor Ahearn went the distance (12 innings) in the circle, registering nine strikeouts against two walks and scattering 12 hits that amounted to two earned runs.

For UNE, Abby Lambert, Cat Ouellette, and Mollie Bartles recorded hits in each match.

Curry began fast in GAME 1, plating three runs with two gone in the top of the 1st. Duggan knocked in a pair with a double to center and scored on a single up the middle by Kevi Oatway.

A hit-by-pitch, bunt single, and single into shallow left-center loaded the bases for the Colonels in the 2nd, before a strikeout and popout set the stage for LaRosa to crush a grand slam deep over the fence in left-center. Duggan followed with another double, but was stranded in a 7-0 lead.

The Nor'easters got on the board in the 3rd as Ouellette singled through the left side to start the inning, then stole second base with two outs, and came around to score on a single through the right side by Amanda Vallante.

There was a runner on second and one away in the Curry 5th when Jessica Saluti put an RBI-double into the left-center gap for her second hit. The second out and a walk preceeded the second double of the game for Mikayla Lambert, which this time drove in two.

LaRosa and Saluti each scored twice for the Colonels. Ahearn leveled off her personal ledger at 6-6 with the five-inning win.

Sara Pelkey took the loss for UNE in two innings of work. Katelyn Austin notched five strikeouts in relief.

Curry left two runners in scoring position in the top of the 2nd in GAME 2, and UNE pushed one across in the bottom of the frame to take the early advantage. Lambert and Bartles had back-to-back one-out singles, and a walk that included a throwing error on ball-four allowed the hosts to score.
The Colonels responded in the their next at-bat with three runs. Adams started things with a single through the right side, and three consecutive walks moved her around to even the contest at 1-1.
LaRosa and Duggan followed with flyouts, each deep enough for one runner to tag and set the margin at 3-1.LaRosa and Duggan both tallied their first hits of the game with two down in the 5th, and Curry left two aboard again in the 6th as UNE continued to keep the deficit at two.
Then with none out in the 7th, Duggan followed an error and a single from LaRosa with a homer of her own to pad the cushion (6-1).In addition to the four hits for Adams, Caitlin Blanchard contributed two hits for the Colonels, and Ahearn fanned five to go to 7-6.
UNE got a nine-strikeout effort from Lambert in the circle. Ouellette had a squad-high two hits.
On Sunday the teams will conclude their conference schedules, as Curry is slated to entertain Salve Regina University (9-3 CCC) and the Nor'easters will visit Endicott College (9-2 CCC).
