Softball Splits Doubleheader with CCC Opponent Roger Williams

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a doubleheader with Roger Williams University Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels won game one, 5-1, before the Hawks grabbed a 9-3 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

The Colonels (7-10, 4-4 CCC) got all five runs in the first inning off a grand slam from sophomore Kelly Duggan. Freshman April Adams singled, junior Amy Nolan reached base with a walk while freshman Mikayla Lambert singled to left to get the bases loaded for Duggan. The Hawks (9-11, 5-6 CCC) got one run back in the seventh inning when freshman Haley Ledbetter reached base on an error. Junior Veronica Alicea would eventually hit her in to score the only run of the game for the Hawks.

Senior Taylor Ahearn surrendered just three hits and one run (zero earned) with no walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work for the Colonels. Junior Meghan Maliga was tagged with the loss as she allowed five hits and five runs (four earned). She recorded two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

GAME TWO

In the nightcap, the Hawks grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior Chelsea Boulrisse reached on an error and then was batted in by junior Delaney Burns. Freshman Angela Pasquariello was then driven in by Alicea. The Hawks added another run in the second when Ledbetter scored off a single from junior Taylor Messier. In the top of the fourth inning, the Hawks took a 5-0 lead when Ledbetter scored off a single from sophomore Alicia McCauley and McCauley scored when Messier reached on an error. The Colonels would get two runs back to cut the lead to 5-2 when senior Ariel LaRosa drove in freshman Adams and Duggan plated sophomore Marissa Bruno.

The Hawks scored two more runs in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead to 9-1. Burns would bring in Pasquariello on a single to right field and then would come in to score off a single from Alicea. The Colonels would get the last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Jessica Saluti would score off a single from LaRosa. 

Freshman Mikayla Lambert took the loss after allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in four innings of work. Meghan Maliga, meanwhile, earned the win as she gave up six hits and three runs (one earned) in seven innings. 

Curry plays two at Gordon Monday at 3:30. The Hawks host Wheaton for two games on Tuesday at 3:30.
