Softball Splits a Pair of One-Run Contests with Visiting CCC Rival UNE

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and the University of New England split a doubleheader in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels captured the opener 1-0 before the Nor'easters rebounded in the second game, 3-2. Curry is now 17-11 on the season and 7-3 in CCC play, while UNE stands at 20-10 overall and 10-4 in conference action.

GAME 1

Both teams remained scoreless until the Colonels put the only run of the game on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Ariel Larosa (Saugus, Mass.) kicked off the inning with a single to left. After recording an out, the Nor'easters allowed senior Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to hit a double to left center, moving Larosa to third base. Junior Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Larosa for the 1-0 lead. Curry recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Junior Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) went the distance to improve her record to 12-2. She allowed two hits, two walks and no runs while striking out two over seven innings. Sophomore Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) took the loss, tossing six innings and surrendering four hits, three walks and one earned run. She fanned two.

The score remained tied until the top of the seventh when freshman Sydney Helmbrecht (Grand Rapids, Minn.) hit an RBI single to center. The Nor'easters couldn't manage another run in the inning, but held the Colonels hitless in the bottom to claim the 3-2 victory.
