MILTON, Mass. – Curry College picked up a doubleheader sweep over visiting Newbury College in non-conference softball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels captured the opener, 4-2, and then finished off the Nighthawks prevailing in a squeaker, 3-2. Curry improved to 7-7 on the season, while Newbury fell to 4-9.

GAME 1

In the second inning, Curry opened the scoring on a double by junior Abigail Macomber (Milton, Mass.) bringing home junior Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) and senior Paige Smigiel (Lisbon, Conn.). Senior Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) recorded an RBI single to bring home Macomber.

In the third inning the Colonels extended their lead to 4-0 as Smigiel singled past third base resulting in freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) crossing home.

Newbury rallied, cutting Curry's lead in half (4-2) in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Alyssa Donovan (West Haven, Conn.) scored the first run on an error by the catcher. Freshman Lindsey Clark (River Edge, N.J.) made it home on a single by senior Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.).

Curry pulled even in the fourth, as freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) belted a two-run home run that also scored junior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.).

The score remained knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh, when Bruno drove home her third run of the game, with a one-out, RBI single to left field that scored sophomore Amy Nolan with the game-winning run.

Junior Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) improved to 6-1 with a complete-game effort. She allowed five hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out 10.
