Softball Shuts Down Wooster, 6-1, Before Falling to St. Mary's 4-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior pitcher Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) turned in another stellar Spring Break effort, leading the Curry College softball team to a 6-1 win over the College of Wooster on Thursday in Fort Myers.

Ahearn improved to 3-0, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings before giving way to freshman McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.). Ahearn allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two. Barlow allowed one unearned run on one hit in her 1 1/3 innings of relief work.

The Colonels got all the runs they would need in the top of the first, plating a pair on a pair of Wooster errors and a run-scoring single from freshman Kelly Duggan (Norwood, Mass.). Curry got three more in the top of the fourth, driven in by bases loaded walks for Duggan and senior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) and an RBI base hit from freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.).

In the second game of the day, the Colonels fell 4-3 to St. Mary's College of Indiana. Curry and senior pitcher Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) fell behind 3-0 after two innings. But in the top of the sixth, the Colonels pulled to within 3-2 on run-scoring singles from Duggan and senior Paige Smigiel (Lisbon, Conn.). An inning later, Curry plated the tying run on a two-out single by LaRosa that brought freshman pinch-runner Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.).

But in the bottom of the seventh, after Lundstrom retired the leadoff batter, St. Mary's strung together three-straight hits to grab the 4-3 win. Lundstrom went 6 1/3 innings, surrendering 10 hits, two walks and three earned runs while striking out three.

The Colonels close out their Spring Break trip on Friday with games against SUNY Oneonta (1:00 p.m.) and Pittsburgh-Bradford (3:00 p.m.).
