Softball Goes 1-1 in a Non-Conference Doubleheader at Johnson & Wales

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Curry at Pierce Field on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson & Wales notched a 2-1 win in the opener with Curry posting a 1-0 victory in the nightcap for the split.

In the opener, Curry got on the board in the top of the third when sophomore Abby Macomber (Milton, Mass.) led off with a walk and came around to score on an RBI single by junior Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) to put the Colonels up 1-0.  Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the frame when freshman Carly Cabral (Warwick, R.I.) reached on a Curry miscue and scored on an RBI single by freshman Cynthia Proby (Bremerton, Wash.) to knot the game at 1-1.  In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, N.J.) had a two-out single and scored on an RBI single to center by junior Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y.) to give the Wildcats the 2-1 advantage.  Junior Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, N.J.) then held Curry scoreless through the last two innings to secure the 2-1 victory.  Cwalinski allowed one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts in the complete-game win for JWU.  Proby and junior Rachael Marino (Northbridge, Mass.) each had a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

The nightcap saw both teams battle through six scoreless innings until Curry got on the board in the seventh after sophomore Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by senior Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.) for the only run of the game as Curry took the 1-0 victory.  Gardner suffered the loss for JWU, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts.  She also collected two hits at the plate for the Wildcats.  Freshman Melissa Donoghue (Malden, Mass.) notched the victory in the pitching circle for Curry, going seven shutout innings with six hits.

With the split JWU is now 8-12 on the year while Curry is 9-7 on the season.
