Huge Second-Game Comeback Lifts Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of Anna Maria
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College overcame a 9-0 deficit in the nightcap, winning 10-9 to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Anna Maria College in softball action Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels captured the opener, 7-4. With the wins, Curry improved to 20-20 overall and 14-10 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), and clinched the #6 seed in next week’s conference tournament. The AMCATS fell to 15-21 overall and 8-16 in league play.

GAME ONE

In the opener, Anna Maria broke on top 2-0 in the top of the first with an RBI single from Jill Hurley and an RBI double by Dominique Marchand. The Colonels took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning, then built a 5-2 lead through four after solo home runs from Chelsey Munsey in the third and Megan Flaherty in the fourth. A two-run blast by Taryn  Vigeant in the sixth extended the lead to 7-2. The AMCATS plated a pair in the top of the seventh, but fell short, 7-4.

Anna Maria out-hit Curry, 12-5, including 3-for-4 efforts from both Hurley and Sarah Boyda. Janelle Mayo evened her season record at 8-8, tossing a complete-game and allowing three earned runs and a walk while striking out four. AMCATS’ starter Nicole Hackenson (6-13) absorbed the loss, allowing three earned runs and three walks without retiring a batter.

In the nightcap, Anna Maria again broke out on top, as Hurley hit a three-run round-tripper in the top of the first. The lead grew to 4-0 in the second, with RBI singles from Mary Moroski and Boyda. The visitors enjoyed a five-run fourth inning, capped off by another run-scoring hit by Hurley that brought home Boykin, and took a 9-0 advantage into the bottom of the fourth.

Curry began mounting its comeback with five runs in the fourth. Three runs came home on bases loaded walks. Those were followed by RBI singles from Mikaela Carney and Amanda Peters. A two-run blast by Peters in the sixth cut the Colonels’ deficit to 9-7. Then, in its final at-bat, Curry completed the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, plating the game-winning run on an RBI double by Heather Carrier.

Peters and Carney each had two hits and three and two RBI, respectively. Boykin and Hurley had three RBI apiece, while Moroski chipped in with two RBI. Mayo (9-8) pitched a perfect top of the seventh in relief to earn the win. Michelle Blackler (9-8) took the loss for the AMCATS.

The Colonels will host #7 New England College on May 2 at 4:00 p.m. in the play-in round of the TCCC Tournament.
