Softball Falls 8-1 at Conference Foe Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams completed its rescheduled doubleheader against Curry College Tuesday afternoon, coming away with an 8-1 win in the Hawks’ final home game of the regular season. [Box Score]

The Colonels took the opener of the doubleheader 5-2 in extra innings back on April 16, but the second game was stopped in the top of the second inning because of rain.

In today’s game, Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) worked her way out of a couple of jams early in the game to keep the Hawks off the board. In the first inning, after allowing leadoff walks to Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.), Lundstrom struck out the next three to hold the Hawks scoreless. In the next inning, the Hawks loaded the bases with one out, but Lundstrom again got RWU to go down swinging to keep the runners stranded.

Curry would strike first, getting a run in the top of the second. After Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, Mass.) reached via a single, she would score on a miscue in the outfield off of a single by Heather Carrier (Scarborough, Maine), putting the Colonels up 1-0.

That would be all the Hawks would allow, as RWU tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) to bring in Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.). Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) would then bring Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) home with an RBI ground-rule double to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Kara Lewis (Bristol, R.I.) would increase the Hawks’ lead an inning later with an RBI double of her own.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks took advantage of Curry defensive miscues to take a commanding 8-1 lead. After retiring the first two batters, the Colonels would allow three base hits and commit three errors, leading to five unearned runs in the inning. The Hawks would go on to hold on to their seven-run lead for the win.

Doolin earned the win, allowing one unearned run in six innings of work before Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) tossed a scoreless seventh. Pirez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Lewis went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Doolin and Tierney added two hits and a run apiece.

Lundstrom took the loss, giving up two unearned runs in three innings before being relieved by Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.), who allowed six runs (one earned) in three innings. Carrier finished 2-for-3 with Munsey and Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) each going 1-for-3.

Roger Williams (17-20, 15-7 TCCC) closes out the regular season Wednesday at the University of New England, while Curry (18-20, 12-10 TCCC) hosts Anna Maria tomorrow in its home finale. (Game recap courtesy of RWU Sports Information)
