Softball Goes 1-1 vs. Visiting UMass Dartmouth in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and UMass Dartmouth split a doubleheader in non-conference softball action Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Corsairs took the opener, 8-7 in eight innings. The Colonels bounced back in the nightcap, 5-2. Curry is now 16-19 on the season, while UMass Dartmouth now stands at 7-14.

GAME ONE

In the opener, the Corsairs took an early 1-0 lead on a second-inning solo home run by Hannah Rounds. The Colonels responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a three-run triple from Taryn Vigeant.

Trailing 7-4 entering the top of the sixth, the visitors plated three runs to tie the game and eventually send it into extra innings. The big blow was a two-run single off the bat of Kaitlin Hogan.

In the top of the eighth, Hogan brought home the game-winning run on a double to right field that scored Emily Pontes.

Hogan went 3-for-5 with three RBI, Rounds was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Brittany Eldridge chipped in with three hits. Vigeant provided much of the offense for the hosts, going 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Eldridge (7-9) picked up the complete-game win, allowing nine hits, four walks and no earned runs, while striking out seven. Janelle Mayo took the loss in relief, allowing two hits, one walk and one unearned run over 2 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, a Michelle Conway solo home run and an Eldridge RBI groundout gave UMass Dartmouth an early 2-0 lead. Curry quickly pulled even in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Amanda Peters and Mayo.

The Corsairs were held scoreless for the remainder of the game while the Colonels scored a total of five unanswered runs. Vigeant continued her hot hitting with an RBI double in the bottom of the second that scored Valarie LaSala with what proved to be the winning run.

Peters went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs knocked in, while Amanda Felzmann collected two hits in three at-bats. Mayo went the distance to improve to 6-8. She allowed just three hits and two earned runs while walking five and striking out three in seven innings of work. Eldridge notched her second complete game of the day, but was tagged with the loss after surrendering nine hits and four earned runs over six innings.

Curry resumes play on Tuesday, traveling to Gordon for a conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. UMass Dartmouth is also in action on Tuesday, hosting Eastern Connecticut for a conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
