Nine-Run First Inning vs. Smith Propels Softball to First Win of 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Curry College softball team picked up its first win of the season, an 11-1, five-inning victory over Smith College in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday evening. The win was immediately preceded by a 10-3 defeat at the hands of St. Joseph’s College of Maine.

The Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Monks stormed back, scoring 10 runs over their final four frames off of Curry senior starter Janelle Mayo and senior reliever Amanda Peters. Curry’s final run came in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Mikaela Carney. St. Joseph’s (4-1) won despite committing five errors.

Against Smith (1-7), the Colonels enjoyed their first offensive explosion of 2011, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits, including nine runs and seven hits in the bottom of the first inning alone. Stacey Norton had a double and three runs batted in to pace Curry (1-5). Mayo and Carney had two RBI apiece, while Heather Carrier, Amanda Felzmann, Valarie LaSala and Peters each drove in single runs. Freshman Jennifer Lundstrom evened her record at 1-1, tossing a five-inning complete game, allowing three hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out five.
