Softball Advances in TCCC Tournament With Come-From-Behind 6-5 Win Over Nichols
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College overcame a 5-1 deficit to notch a 6-5 win in eight innings over Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Softball Tournament Tuesday afternoon in Milton. With the play-in victory, the sixth-seeded Colonels improve to 19-19 and advance to the double-elimination portion of the league tournament. The seventh-seeded Bison see their season come to a close with a 16-22-1 final record.

Visiting Nichols broke on top with three runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) brought one run home with a single to centerfield, while junior Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) plated a pair with an infield base hit. The Bison stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth before Curry got on the board in the bottom of the frame on an RBI fielder’s choice by freshman Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.).

A run-scoring groundout by senior Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.) in the top of the seventh made the score 5-1, then the hosts began their comeback. A combination of four walks and five wild pitches thrown by Bison starter Hassett, along with an RBI single by junior Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.), led to four Colonels’ runs and sent the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, freshman Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, Mass.) walked to lead off the Curry half of the inning and eventually scored the game-winning run on a botched force attempt at home.

Mayo (11-6) picked up the win in relief of junior Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.), who left after the third inning with an injury. Mayo hurled the final five innings, allowing five hits, four walks and two earned runs while striking out three. Hassett took the loss to drop to 6-10 on the year. She surrendered five hits, seven walks and five earned runs while striking out two in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Curry now travels to the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine on Wednesday to take on third-seeded Western New England College in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
