Softball Goes 1-1 at Conference Rival Anna Maria
PAXTON, Mass. -  Junior Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) allowed zero earned runs in Game 1, as the AMCATS split a doubleheader in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action with the Colonels. The AMCATS took game one, 6-1, before the Colonels took game two by a score of 6-3. The Colonels record now stands at 16-17, with an 11-9 record in conference, while the AMCATS are now 18-18 overall, with a 14-8 record in the TCCC.

The Colonels were led by pitcher Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass), who got the win in game two while surrendering zero earned runs and striking out six. First baseman Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) had three hits in the game, including a monster grand slam in the third inning, which proved to be the difference in the game.

In game one, the AMCATS came out and put up five runs in the first inning. After Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) singled to start the inning, Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) followed her with a walk. After a double steal put both runners on second and third, both runs came around on an error, giving the AMCATS a quick 2-0 lead. Hurley followed that up with a RBI single, putting the AMCATS up 3-0. The AMCATS went on to score two more runs in the inning, and that proved to be all the AMCATS would need.
Renna took a shutout into the seventh inning, when the Colonels finally broke through with an unearned run.

Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) scored the lone run for the Colonels while also adding three hits, but it was not enough as the final score read 6-1 in favor of the AMCATS. Renna improved her record to 15-11 on the year, while Amanda Peters took the tough-luck loss for Colonels, only allowing just three earned runs in the complete game loss.

In game two, the AMCATS once again jumped on the board in the first inning. Boyda started the game off with a single, advanced to third on a Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) single, and scored an unearned run on an error.

The Colonels were shut out through the first two innings, but exploded for five runs in the third. Valarie LaSala (Seaford, N.Y.) singled to centerfield and scored on a double in the gap by Jackman. The next two batters walked, loading the bases for Peters, who launched a grand slam over the left centerfield fence.

The AMCATS picked up unearned runS in the both the fifth and sixth innings, but it was not enough. Mayo kept the AMCATS potent offense off balance all game, and finished off the complete game with a 6-3 victory. Mayo improved her record to 9-5, while Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, MA) took the loss for the AMCATS.

The Colonels will be back in action Friday, as they travel to Regis for a TCCC doubleheader, while the AMCATS take on Salve Regina at home during Senior Day this Saturday starting at 12:00 pm. (Game recaps courtesy of Anna Maria Sports Information)
