Softball Swept By Conference Rival Salve Regina
NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior pitcher Sarah Jakiela [Meriden, Conn.] led Salve Regina University to a doubleheader sweep over Curry College as the Seahawks vaulted into fourth place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

In the first game, Jakiela's bat was the weapon. After Curry College took a 4-1 lead in the 3rd inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from junior shortstop Joneiha Veiga [Brockton, Mass.], Jakiela delivered a bases-loaded double to tie the game.

Junior infielder Samantha Velezis [Waterbury, Conn.] put the Colonels (13-16; 8-8 TCCC) back on top with an RBI double in the 4th inning. Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the 7th.

Freshman LF Zeena Barbarita [Johnston, R.I.] led off with a double to center. Jakiela followed with a one-out single to bring home the tying run. Kelly Pryor [Cheshire, Conn.] pinch ran for Jakiela and came home with the game-winning run when freshman infielder Courtney Fleming [Wethersfield, Conn.] stroked a two-strike pitch into right field.

In the second game, Jakiela silenced the Curry batters with a perfect game for the first four innings. The Colonels had extended at-bats against the senior hurler by fouling off pitch after pitch. Freshman infielder Amanda Felzmann [Bellingham, Mass.] was the first to reach Jakiela for a hit but she was immediately erased from the base paths when her single to right field was returned by sophomore OF Deanna Ciccarelli [Paramus, N.J.] to first baseman Fleming. Felzmann had rounded the bag in the wrong direction and Fleming applied the tag for the first out of the 5th inning.

Jakiela issued a pair of two-out walks, an RBI single and a hit batsman to load the bases for senior 3B Kristen Jackman [Stoughton, Mass.]. Jakiela helped her own cause by inducing a grounder back to the circle to end the 5th frame.

Salve Regina (14-10; 9-7 TCCC) scored its first run in the second game when Jo Quintana [Denver, Colo.] led off the 2nd with a single over Jackman's glove at third. Freshman OF Jen Cruver [North Haven, Conn.] sacrificed her to second and Quintana did not stop there. She drew an errant throw on her way to third and made it all the way home on the play.

Cruver and Jakiela each had RBI base hits in the 4th inning. Jakiela finished the twin bill with two pitching victories and a 4-for-7 day at the plate plus five RBI.

The Seahawks host conference-leading Western New England College on Saturday at Toppa Field (noon) while Curry travels a short distance to play at Eastern Nazarene College. (Game recaps courtesy of Salve Regina Sports Information)
