Softball Tripped Up 5-4 and 8-0 at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team knocked visiting Curry from the unbeaten ranks in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) after taking both ends of a doubleheader, 5-4 and 8-0 in six innings, Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears got over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 10-9 and stayed perfect in the conference with a 6-0 mark. The Colonels dropped to 11-10 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

In the first game, senior right fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) came through with a clutch RBI single in the fourth inning that knocked in the winning run.

WNEC scored two runs in the fourth as sophomore designated hitter Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) tied the contest with a single that drove in junior first baseman Trish Breault (Millville, MA) who singled with one out.

Senior centerfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburgh, MA) followed with another single, and both she and Breault moved up a base on an illegal pitch.

Breault finished with three hits, including a two-run double that helped give WNEC a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Lempicki also had two hits in the game.

Curry tied the game in the third with a two-run double by junior first baseman Janelle Mayo (Worcester, MA) the big hit. She also had a pair of singles and scored a run.

Junior pitcher Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, MA), junior shortstop Joneiha Veiga (Brockton, MA), and freshman left fielder Mikaela Carney (North Reading, MA) each added two hits for the Colonels.

Sophomore Meagan Riemann (Thompson, CT) took the win and evened her record at 4-4 despite giving up 11 hits. She pitched out of several jams, including a bases loaded and no outs situation in the Colonels' fifth.

In the second contest, Lempicki allowed only two hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in her first start of the season. Senior Victoria Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) struck out a batter in her only inning.

Freshman shortstop Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, CT) had a big game with two hits capped by a three-run double in the sixth that ended the game because of the mercy rule.

Junior third base player Angela Monaco (Monroe, CT) also had two hits, including a two-run double that gave the Golden Bears a 5-0 lead after three innings. (Game recap courtesy of WNEC Sports Information)
