Softball Edges Johnson & Wales, 5-4, to Run Win Streak to Five
MILTON, Mass. - A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth by senior Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) scored junior Samantha Velezis (Waterbury, Conn.) with what proved to be the winning run, as Curry College edged visiting Johnson & Wales, 5-4, in non-conference softball action Friday afternoon in Milton.

Jackman led off the bottom of the first with a home run, part of a two-run inning for the Colonels (9-8). The Wildcats (3-15) got on the board in top of the third when freshman Rachel Marino (Northbridge, Mass.) tripled home classmate Ellis Kim (Glendale, Calif.), who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Curry extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third, but Johnson & Wales pulled even in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Amy Fish (Oxford, Mass.) and an RBI fielder's choice by Marino. The Colonels re-took the lead in their half of the fourth when sophomore Jaimee Fligg (Osterville, Mass.) singled home freshman Marissa Strangie (Rowley, Mass.), who led off the frame with a triple.

The Wildcats knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth when sophomore Olivia England (Natick, Mass.) launched a home run to centerfield, before Jackman plated the game-winning run an inning later.

Sophomore Jillian Nemcovich (Franklin, N.H.) picked up the win for Curry, evening her record at 2-2 on the season. She tossed six innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and four earned runs while striking out two. Junior Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded the final three outs to earn her first save of the year. Marino absorbed the loss to fall to 2-7 on the season. In six innings, she allowed eight hits, one walk and three earned runs while striking out six.

Both teams play conference road doubleheaders on April 3. Curry travels to Nichols College for a 12:00 p.m. start while Johnson & Wales plays at St. Joseph's (Maine) at 1:00 p.m.
