Men’s Volleyball Drops Pair of Five Set Matches

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated in both games in a tri-match against Emerson College and Vermont State Johnson, losing 3-2 in both games. The tri-match was played throughout the day on Saturday at Dr. Eleanor Meyrhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the losses, the Colonels' overall record slides to 4-12 on the season.

GAME ONE: Emerson 3, Curry 2 (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12)

The Colonels' first match of the day against Emerson went five sets, resulting in a loss for the home team. After dropping set one, Curry battled back in the second, orchestrating a 9-2 scoring run late in the set to take a 22-18 lead off back-to-back service aces from Owen Hemmenway while a kill by Hashim Khan tied the match score at 1-1.

The third set was all Curry as the Colonels held the lead for the entirety of the set, with a Chris Milfort kill giving the home team a 19-13 advantage, their largest lead of the game. Service errors by the Lions closed out the set, giving Curry a 2-1 match lead.

Emerson took a competitive set four, sending the game to a fifth and final set. Despite jumping out to an early 5-2 lead, the Lions fought back, retook the advantage and closed out the match on top.

GAME TWO: Vermont 3, Curry 2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 15-8)

The Colonels had a dominant start, jumping out to a 15-9 lead with a four-point scoring run forcing a timeout by the visiting Badgers. Vermont battled back to within three but a three-point run, capped off by a service ace from Lyon Schoenthaler, closed out the set in favor of the home team.

After dropping sets two and three, Curry had its best set of the day, jumping out to an early 5-0 advantage with a pair of kills by Milfort setting the tone for the Colonels. After an eight-point win in set three, the fifth saw the Badgers run away with the lead, putting the match out of reach for Curry.

Curry College returns to action on Wednesday, March 5th, to take on Endicott in a home match beginning at 6 p.m.
