WALPOLE, Mass. – The Curry College men's tennis team lost a 5-4 decision against Thomas College on Saturday afternoon in their non-conference finale on Senior Day.
The Terriers came out of the gate strong, taking doubles two of the three doubles matches. Juniors Ryan Chasse (Fort Kent, Maine) and first doubles partner Kaleb Payson (Lamoine, Maine) held off the Colonel duo of junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) by a score of 8-5. Senior Christo Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine) and sophomore Jose Alfonso (Tenerife, Spain) won at No. 3 over seniors Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) and Joshua Bernstein (Cherry Hill, N.J.) by an 8-5 final.
Curry were able to salvage one doubles match. Senior Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and freshman Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.) cleaned up second doubles by a score of 8-4.
Trailing 2-1 entering the singles portion of the match, the Colonels battled back to take the lead behind the top three in the lineup. Roach defeated Chaase at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1). Stento fought through a tight first set 7-5 and took the second 6-1 over Payson at No. 2 singles. Hefler came out victorious at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Waterhouse.
Thomas sealed the match with victories at fourth through six singles, two of which came in three sets. Sutton snuck past Russo 7-6 in the first set and then won the second 6-1 at No. 4. Naranja and Alfonso pulled out three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to secure the win for the Terriers.
Thomas improved to 11-4 overall while Curry dropped to 3-13 on the season.
Curry closes the regular with two straight road matches, the first being on Tuesday, April 23 at Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m.
