Colonels Blanked at UMass Dartmouth in Non-Conference Men's Tennis Action

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - A couple of Corsairs earned their first victories of the season as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s tennis team blanked visiting Curry, 9-0, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.

Sophomore Jonah Katz (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead HS) and freshman Steve Troio (Charlton, MA/Charlton HS) each won for the first time.

Katz defeated freshman Joe Berger (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) at number five singles, 6-4, 6-0, and Troio downed freshman Eric Hellberg (Somers, NY/Kildonan School) at number six singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Katz and Troio defeated Berger and Hellberg at number three doubles, 8-4.

Junior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS), freshman Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and junior Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) also won twice for UMD. Parker defeated freshman Cameron Chamberlain (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) at number two singles, 6-1, 6-2; Lawton downed junior Lucas Donaway (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Zygmont beat junior Paul Jeppesen (Newington, NH/Proctor Academy) at number four singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Parker and senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) combined to defeat Chamberlain and junior Tyler Collins (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay HS) at number one doubles, 8-4, and Lawton and Zygmont teamed to down Donaway and Jeppesen at number two doubles, 8-0.

The Corsairs improved to 6-1 with the victory, while the Colonels dropped to 0-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Springfield Tuesday. Curry will host Salve Regina Wednesday. (Match recap courtesy of UMD Sports Information)
