Men's Tennis Knocked Out of TCCC Tournament By Top-Seeded Roger Williams

RIVERSIDE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men’s Tennis team advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals with a 5-3 win over Curry College Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks were forced to move their match to Center Court Tennis Club in Riverside, Rhode Island after rainy conditions left their home courts unsuitable for playing. Playing on new courts left the Hawks in a bit of a struggle early on, but were still able to come away with the victory.

RWU took two of the three doubles matches, with Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) and Nicholas Hawvermale (Bethlehem, Conn.) outlasted J.D. Moyer (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Tyler Dulmage (Woodstock, Vt.) 8-2 at #2. Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) got the Hawks’ second win at #3, taking a 8-1 decision over Thomas Bagley (Centerville, Mass.) and Robert Rosenbaum (Sharon, Mass.). Gregory Kirschner (Williston Park, N.Y.) and Brian Leahy (Reading, Mass.) defeated David Lange (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) 8-1 at #1 to give the Colonels their first point of the day.

At singles, Kirschner and Leahy picked up two more wins for Curry, with Kirschner beating DeNunzio 6-2, 6-3 at the first flight while Leahy won 7-5, 6-1 over Pacino at #3. The Hawks still managed to take the three necessary matches to advance to the semis. Erikson blanked Charlie Edlund 6-0, 6-0 at #2, and Baker won 6-3, 6-1 over Dulmage. Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) got the fifth and deciding point for Roger Williams with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tyler Collins (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) at #6.

The #5 match between Nate Rohman (Topsham, Maine) and Moyer went unfinished with Rohman ahead 7-5, 2-0.

Roger Williams (15-6, 11-0 TCCC) will host #4 seed Colby-Sawyer College, who advanced with a 5-1 win over Western New England College, on Wednesday. Curry concludes its season with a record of 7-11 and 5-6 in the TCCC. (Match recap courtesy of Roger Williams Sports Information)
