Men’s Soccer Falls in Conference Clash

BIDDEFORD, Maine – On Tuesday evening, the Curry College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of New England (UNE), a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent. With the win, the Nor'easters improve to 7-5-2 overall with a 1-3-0 record in league play. The Colonels move to 2-11-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the CCC.

The Colonels were the first to light up the scoreboard early in the match, grabbing a 1-0 advantage as Jonathan Caldwell (East Weymouth, Mass.) beat UNE goalie Will Shearon (Newcastle, England) in just the seventh minute. Jared Mallers (North Easton, Mass.) earned as assist on the play. The lead held for the majority of the first half, but with less than 15 minutes remaining until the intermission, Colin Madigan (Canton, Conn.) netted the equalizer off a pass from Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine). In the 40th minute, the Nor'easters struck again, as Derek DeSantis (East Taunton, Mass.) gave the hosts their first lead of the evening. Matt Ferguson (Pembroke, N.H.) and Twombly were credited with the helpers.

UNE took their 2-1 edge into the break, but they were not done there. In the 60th minute, Brady Cyr (South Portland, Maine) made the lead 3-1, as Cody Kennedy (Millbury, Mass.) picked up his first point of the day with the assist. Claudio Orsini (Watertown, Conn.) looked to give the Colonels new life, nearly scoring twice near the midpoint of the second half, but one shot found the crossbar while the other was turned away by Shearon. Orsini's chances would be the final shots taken by Curry in the match, as UNE closed out the conference victory.

Callum Heaslewood (London, England) turned in four shots as a substitute for the hosts, while the Colonels were led by Orsini's pair of shots. Curry keeper Jan Bacerra (Chappaqua, N.Y., 0-3-1) turned in six saves while his counterpart, Shearon (2-2-2), collected one.

The Nor'easters continue their conference schedule as they host Western New England University on Saturday, October 19 at 12:00 p.m. The Colonels will also get back to CCC action on Saturday, as they stay on the road to take on Gordon College at 6:00 p.m.
