Men's Soccer Shuts Out Johnson State in Non-Conference Play, 5-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Men's Soccer Team picked up a 5-0 non-conference victory over visiting Johnson State College on Sunday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field. With the win, the Colonels improve to 2-1-1 while the Badgers slip to 3-1.

Curry dominated play in the first half, grabbing a 13-1 advantage in shots. The Colonels got on the board in the ninth minute when Diego Vargas (McLean, Va.) found the back of the net to put Curry up 1-0. Almost eight minutes later, senior captain Giancarlo Orsini (Watertown, Conn.) received a pass from Dave Stapleton (North Easton, Mass.) and put the shot past Badgers' netminder Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.). The Colonels tacked on one more before the intermission as Chris Ricca (Smith's Parish, Bermuda) tallied his first collegiate goal, with the assist going to Brandon Rinaldi (Watertown, Conn.).

Curry continued their strong play in the second half, outshooting Johnson State, 13-0. The Colonels added two more goals to their lead, one by way of a penalty kick from Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the 49th minute and then Ricca scored his second of the day to put Curry up, 5-0. The assist on the goal went to Silvia.

The Colonels held a 28-1 advantage in shots while also holding the edge in corners, 7-2. Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) recorded the victory in the net, making one save. Lane was credited with the loss while making eight saves in 74 minutes.

Curry returns to the field on Wednesday when they travel to Framingham State for a road contest at 4:00 p.m. Johnson State will next play Wednesday when they host Worcester State on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
