Men's Soccer Bested by Westfield State, 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Legend Mu'Min (Central/Springfield, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Westfield State University to a 3-0 win over Curry College in a non-conference men's soccer match at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.

Westfield State improves to 7-4-1 on the season with the win.

Mu'Min's effort led to the Owls first goal in the 33rd minute, as Curry had a corner kick attempt that was mis-struck and rolled slowly to the top of the penalty area.  Mu'Min gathered the ball and carried it the length of the field, beating a pair of Colonels' defenders in the attacking half of the field, then rolled a shot towards far post that Westfield's Tyler Gay (Smith Academy/Hatfield, Mass.) ran on to near the goal line to finish and assure the Owls' goal and a 1-0 lead.

Westfield State extended its lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute, when Mu'min converted off the rebound of a hard shot from Kieran Moriarty (West Springfield, Mass.).

The Owls capped the scoring in the 72nd minute as Kory McGilvray (Wilmington, Mass.) played a long through ball up the left side of the field that Alex Dragon ran on to and was in cleanly against Curry goalkeeper Dan Johnson (Barlow/Easton, Conn.) whom he beat for the 3-0 final.

Westfield State finished with a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.  Owls' junior goalkeeper Marc Patnaude (North Andover, Mass.) made three saves in earning the shutout.

Curry split time in goal with freshman Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) playing the first half and making six saves, while his classmate Johnson came on for the second half and made six saves as well.  The Colonels fall to 5-9-1 on the season.

Westfield State will have a quick turnaround, facing Worcester State in a key MASCAC conference game on Friday evening in Worcester.  Curry will next travel to Salve Regina for a CCC matchup on Saturday.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Westfield State Sports Information)
