Men's Soccer Absorbs a 5-1 Loss at CCC Rival Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon Men's Soccer posted a 5-1 win over Curry on Homecoming Saturday at the Quad. Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) scored twice in five minutes to blow the game open in the second half and give the Scots their sixth straight triumph.

The Fighting Scots improve to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Curry loses for only the second time in 2015, at 10-2 overall and 2-2 in the CCC.

Curry entered the day having surrendered only six goals in 11 games, but Gordon threatened from the outset. Colonels' keeper Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) was on his toes all afternoon, including having to make a big save on a header just a minute into the game. The Scots hit the post twice in the opening 15 minutes to keep the pressure on when Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) shuffled through the defense and tucked one inside the post in the 18th minute.

Only two minutes later, Gordon threatened again with Cole being the catalyst. The junior took the ball down to the end line on the left side and strung a ball through the muck to the foot of Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.). The freshman was initially stuffed, but he was able to poke it past Johnson for his first collegiate goal.

Cole looked to give Gordon a 3-0 lead as the horn sounded in the first half, but Johnson was able to get enough of a tip to push it to the goal post and out.

Gordon garnered a 14-2 advantage in shot attempts in the first half.

Crocker virtually put the game out of reach early in the second half with a pair of scores. The senior dribbled his first one around the goalkeeper after stealing the ball in the back and beat a diving defender for the goal. In the 58th minute, Crocker was open on a cross from Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) and he put a left footer into the right corner.

Danny Perez (Billerica, Mass.) officially iced the game in the 83rd minute when he tracked down a looping pass from defenseman Ben Lydick (Falmouth, Maine). Perez beat his defender to the outside and put it over the top of Johnson for the fifth goal of the day.

Curry got one back exactly a minute later from Garrett Lemoine (Rutland, Mass.) on a hustle play, but it was too late for the Colonels.

Johnson made nine saves for Curry, while Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) and Bruce Gerberich (Fredericksburg, Pa.) combined for four stops.

The Colonels travel to Rhode Island College on Wednesday, while Gordon has a week to rest before hosting Eastern Nazarene next Saturday evening. (Story Recap Courtesy of Sports Information)
