Men's Soccer Outlasts Newbury, 3-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Newbury College, 3-0, on Monday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win Curry improves to 8-0 overall, earning their eighth victory in a row. The Nighthawks fell to 4-5 on the season.

The first half had the Nighthawks holding the advantage in shots at 12-6.  Solid play by the Colonels junior netminder, Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) held Newbury scoreless making seven stops.  Curry got off six strikes but landed only one on net.  Freshman goaltender Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) made a diving save off a shot by senior Mike McFarland (Dedham, Mass.).  The Nighthawks also had two corner kicks while the Colonels had zero.

Curry broke the tie early on in final stanza.  Newbury's freshman Mario Herrera (Casillas, Guatemala) caused a foul inside the 18-yard box giving the Colonels a penalty kick.  Senior Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) was awarded the PK and scored to gain the lead.  Curry kept up the momentum controlling the opening 25 minutes.  The Nighthawks only got one shot off during that time span while the Colonels managed to tally another two goals.  At the 61:03 minute mark senior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) sent sophomore Giancarlo Orsini (Watertown, Mass.) a through ball.  Orsini collected the pass and sent the ball past the glove of Smith.  Just over three minutes later Curry extended their lead to three after senior Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.) netted his first of the day off a corner kick by Cotnoir.   Newbury struggled trying to get on the board but just couldn't get past the strong defense Curry was playing.  They managed just three more shots for a second half total of four with two landing on net.  The Colonels kept the pressure on the Nighthawks defense and Smith but finished with the 3-0 victory and eighth straight win to remain undefeated.

The Colonels finished with 23 shots and four corner kicks. The Nighthawks finished with 16 shots and three corner kicks.

Johnson made nine saves in net for the win. Smith made 10 stops in goal in the loss.
