Men's Soccer Battles Colby-Sawyer to a 3-2 Overtime Victory

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Colby-Sawyer College, 3-2 in overtime, on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win Curry improves to 6-0 overall while the Chargers fell to 2-4 on the season.

Curry came back from a 2-0 deficit to earn their sixth consecutive win with a 3-2 overtime victory.

The Chargers came out on fire to start the first half.  They took an early 2-0 lead just less than 15 minutes into play.  Sophomore Zach Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) netted an unassisted goal 7:55 into the contest.  Elmore dribbled past a Colonel defender and struck the ball past the glove of junior goaltender Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.).  At the 14:27 minute mark Colby-Sawyer extended their lead when sophomore Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) one-timed a shot into the upper left corner of the net.  Curry had eight shots but only forced sophomore Sean Babinski (Concord, Calif.) to make one save.  Johnson also had one stop.

The Colonels came into the second half looking like a different team.  They were not satisfied being down 2-0 and showed that as they cut the Chargers lead down to one just 6:10 into the final stanza.  Senior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a through ball to classmate Richkaard Verrier (Milton, Mass.) who tallied his team's first of the night.  Before Colby-Sawyer could even get a shot off, Curry tied the match on only their second shot of the half.  6:18 minutes after Verriers' goal, senior Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.) tied the game at two apiece.  Madden collected a blocked shot outside of the 18-yard box and took a hard strike at the ball that sailed past Babinski. The Colonels kept the pressure on the Chargers defense and Babinski taking seven total shots in the final 45 with Babinski making five saves.  Colby-Sawyer tried getting the game-winner but could only get off three shots with Johnson playing solid between the pipes making all three saves.  Time ran out and after 90 minutes the teams went into OT with a score of 2-2.

After regulation Curry had15 shots and two corner kicks.  Colby-Sawyer had seven shots with zero corners.

It took just 2:27 into the first overtime for the Colonels to get the overtime victory and sixth consecutive win.  Sophomore Hunter Duval (Branford, Mass.) took a shot that Elmore couldn't hold onto.  Duval collected his own rebound and sent a pass to an open senior Mike McFarland (Dedham, Mass.) who netted the game-winner.

The Colonels finished with a total of 16 shots and two corner kicks. The Chargers finished with a total of eight shots and zero corner kicks.

Johnson made five saves for his sixth consecutive win in net. Babinski made an impressive two stops in goal in the loss.
