Men's Soccer Edges CCC Foe Salve Regina, 2-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Salve Regina University, 2-1 in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win Curry remains undefeated improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCC. The Seahawks fell to 2-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the CCC.

The teams battled each other to a 1-1 first half tie.  Shots were even at 10 apiece with the Seahawks landing five on net and the Colonels landing just two.  Curry was first to get on the board at the 36:41 minute mark.  Senior Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) collected the ball after Salve's goaltender freshman Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made a save but couldn't hold onto it.  Montero took advantage of the rebound and one-timed it into the back of the net.  The Colonels weren't able to hold onto their lead too long as the Seahawks tied it up 9:06 minutes later.  Junior Michael Maurial (Washington, Conn.) sent classmate Nolan Brady (Needham, Mass.) a through pass past the Curry defenders.  Brady kicked the ball low into the corner of the net past the Colonels junior goaltender Dan Johnson (Easton, Mass.) for the tying score.  Neither team could tally a go ahead goal before the horn blew.

Senior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) netted the game-winner 18:09 into the final stanza.  Senior Richkaard Verrier (Milton, Mass.) took a shot that Payan saved but couldn't hold onto.  Cotnoir was able to collect the rebound and send it into the back of the net.  Salve put pressure on Curry and the Colonels fought hard to hold onto their lead.  Solid play by Johnson between the pipes held the Seahawks scoreless in the second and the Colonels came out with the 2-1 victory.

The Colonels finished with 20 shots and three corner kicks.  The Seahawks finished with 19 shots and one corner kick.

Johnson made 11 saves for his fifth consecutive win in net.  Payan made a notable seven stops in goal in the loss.
