Men's Soccer Dominates Visiting Wheelock College, 10-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Wheelock College, 10-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 1-0 overall while the Wildcats fell to 0-1 on the season.

The Colonels kicked off their 2015 campaign with a commanding 10-1 victory over visiting Wheelock Wildcats.  Curry had 10 different scorers with three freshmen netting their first collegiate goal.  Freshman Tristan Eckert (Weaverville, N.C.) led all scorers with four points on one goal and two helpers.  Sophomore Reed Crowley (West Bridgewater, Mass.) finished with three points on a tally and an assist.  For Wheelock, Kelzy Rodriguez led with two points on one goal. 

Wheelock scored their lone goal of the game striking first in the opening stanza at 20:23 minutes in.  The Colonels wasted no time as they tied the match just 17 seconds later.  Sophomore Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) sent a nice pass to senior Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) for his first of the season.  Curry went on to tally four more before the end of the half heading into the final 45 with a 5-1 lead.  Senior Steven DePina (Stoughton, Mass.) scored on a PK after a Wildcat defender took him down inside the 18-yard box.  The duo of Crowley and Eckert helped on the Colonels next two scores.   Eckert found an open Crowley in front of the Wildcat net who one-timed it past Noah Horning.  Just under a minute later Crowley assisted on Eckert's first collegiate-goal.  Freshman Philip Ennin (East Hartford, Conn.) earned his first of his college career with an unassisted net just under two minutes remaining in the half.

Curry shut out Wheelock in the second period outscoring while them, 5-0.  Junior Nick LePenna (Milford, Conn.) struck first early on off an assist by Eckert.  Freshman Kyle Henry (Danville, Calif.) netted an unassisted goal, his first collegiate, after defeating a Wildcat defender and striking the ball past the glove of Horning.  Senior Mike McFarland (Dedham, Mass.) scored unassisted at the 72:38 minute-mark for his team's eighth of the game.  Sophomore James Hytner (Lake Grove, N.Y.) sent a through pass to freshman Justin Kantcher (Granada Hills, Calif.) for his first score of the season and sophomore Nate Swartz (North Dighton, Mass.) finished the Colonel's scoring frenzy with 8:38 remaining on the clock.

The Colonels finished with 51 shots and four corner kicks.  The Wildcats finished with four shots and two corner kicks.

Junior Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) made three saves in net for his first win of the season.  Horning made an impressive 18 stops in net for the loss.

Curry returns to action on Thursday, September 3 when they host Emmanuel College in a 7:00 p.m. game start.  Wheelock hosts Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday September 8 in a 7:00 p.m. start.
