Men's Soccer Improves to 2-0 on the Season After a 3-1 Road Victory at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's soccer team dropped their home opener to non-conference Curry College, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon. Colonel junior midfielder Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) scored the game-winner for the Colonels early in the second period to improve to 2-0 as a team.

A highly contested battle throughout the majority of the first half, the Nighthawks jumped on board first. From mid-field, sophomore defender Greg Brooks (Amityville, N.Y.) found first year midfielder Ricarfens Saintil (Boston, Mass.) five yards in front of the net to give Newbury the 1-0 advantage.

However, the lead did not last for very long. Three minutes before the intermission, junior forward Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) tied up the contest at one to head into the break all-square at one a piece.

The Colonels came out strong at the start of the second half. Eight minutes into the period, senior midfielder Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) found Montero to give Curry the 2-1 and they did not look back. Midway through the period, following an outstanding save from Nighthawk senior goalkeeper Zach Verdon (Catskill, N.Y.), Cotnoir connected for his second tally of the game to give the Colonels an insurance goal and take a 3-1 lead.

Newbury falls to 0-3 following the loss while Curry improves to 2-0. The Nighthawks return to the pitch this weekend when they travel to Long Island for the St. Joseph's Invitational on Saturday September 6th and Sunday September 7th. The Colonels will also be back in action on Saturday September 6th when they face MCLA in the CIAO Classic. (Game Recap Courtesy of Newbury Sports Information).
