Babchuck, Gilman & Smith Named as 2014 Men’s Soccer Captains

MILTON, Mass. – Head Coach Peter Mendel and his staff are pleased to announce that next fall, the Colonels' Men's Soccer team will return three senior captains in Darren Smith (Newcastle, Del.), Samuel Babchuck (Bridgewater, Mass.), and Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.)

In 2014, the Colonels will open their season at Western Connecticut State on Saturday August 30. In addition, the Colonels will be playing in the 2014 CIAO Fall Classic hosted by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Saturday and Sunday September 6 and 7. Curry has also added NESCAC squad Bates College and defending ECAC Champion Springfield College to the schedule.

Mendel will be entering his eighth season at the helm of the Curry Men's Soccer Team, having recently been awarded the Eastern Mass. College Coach of the Year award for his team's commitment to community outreach and growing the game throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

"Our staff is very excited about the direction the program is heading," said Mendel. "The environment that the staff and players have created is truly one that is desirable for student-athletes and we're very much looking forward to our 2014 season."

"Darren, Sam and Nick are each great representatives of the entire Curry community both on the field and off," Mendel said "They each have different leadership qualities they bring to the table, and we are looking forward to seeing them take the reins of this team moving forward."

Curry finished with an overall record of 7-8-4 in 2013 and Mendel and his staff feel the Colonels are poised for a successful fall in 2014. "The pieces are there, the staff has been very active recruiting top quality student-athletes, and if we mature a little bit on the field I think we can have a very competitive season," Mendel added.
