Men's Soccer Handed 2-0 Loss by Conference Foe Western New England

MILTON, Mass.- Western New England University defeated Curry College, 2-0, in CCC action on Saturday night in Milton.  With the win the Golden Bears improve to 13-2-1 overall and 7-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Colonels fell to 9-8-1, 2-4-1 in the CCC. 

The first half was an evenly played game with Curry having just one more shot than Western New England.  The Colonels had seven, while the Golden Bears had six.  Both goalkeepers played solid between the pipes for their respective teams.  Junior Brandon Martins (Attleboro, Mass.) played in net for Curry over senior Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) who is injured.  Martins made four saves while Western New England’s goalkeeper, sophomore Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y.) made five.

The Golden Bears finished the half with five corners and seven fouls.  The Colonels finished with two corners and also had seven fouls.

Western New England controlled most of the second half, outshooting Curry, 11-3.  The teams battled for the first 25 minutes each trying to score the first goal.  It was the Golden Bears who took the lead at the 20:19 mark when junior Bobby Jameson (Northbridge, Mass.) scored off a corner kick taken by senior Eric Marcelino (Farmington, Conn.).  Western New England would score one more for the 2-0 shutout just 2:08 minutes later.  Sophomore Mike Wysocki (Somers, Conn.) found a loose ball in front of the net and one-touched it past Martins.  The Colonels had a few of their own opportunities but Villano played strong and held Curry scoreless. 

Western New England ended with 17 shots, nine on net, 12 corners and 13 fouls.  Curry ended with 10 shots, six on net, two corners and 18 fouls. 

Villano made six saves for the win and for his team to remain undefeated in conference play.  Martins made seven saves in the loss.   

The Colonels will travel to conference opponent Gordon College on Wednesday, October 19 for a 3:00 p.m. contest. The Golden Bears host Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 18 for a 3:30 p.m. game start.
