BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men’s Soccer team played to a stalemate against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Curry College Saturday afternoon, tying the Colonels 1-1 in double overtime.
The Hawks remain unbeaten on the season, advancing their record to 9-0-2 and 3-0-1 in the conference, while Curry moves to 7-5-2 (2-1-1 CCC).
Both teams played fairly even in the first half, taking seven shots apiece in the period. The Hawks came close to scoring in the 25th minute, with Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) just missing a cross to Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) in the box.
The Hawks would get on the board near the end of the half, with Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) heading in a corner kick from Pedro Hernandez (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the 43rd minute. The goal for Webson was his second career goal and gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Curry equalized the contest in the same manner as the Hawks in the previous period. Zachary Kumin (Needham, Mass.) headed in a corner kick from Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the 69th minute to tie the game at one.
Roger Williams had numerous opportunities to regain the lead, including a stellar diving save in the 73rd minute by Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) on a shot by Isleib. The Hawks also mishandled a pass in the middle of the box with an empty net in the 85th minute, sending the game to OT.
In the first overtime, Roger Williams controlled the offensive pace but could not score, having a head-on shot blocked by a Colonel defender and another wide-open shot sail wide right. Both teams would eventually hold on for the tie.
Hawk keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) stopped three shots on the day, while Newsome made eight saves for Curry.
Roger Williams hosts UMass-Dartmouth Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., while Curry takes on Bridgewater State on Wednesday. (Game Recap Courtesy of Roger Williams Sports Information)
