Lawless Scores Hat Trick as Men's Soccer Downs Newbury College, 6-2

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated Newbury College, 6-2, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday evening in Milton. With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-5 overall. The Nighthawks fell to 1-5 overall.
Curry wasted no time taking a one goal lead just 5:14 into the first half. The six goals were the most the Colonels have scored this season. Junior Nick Lawless (Hull, Mass.) got his squad on the board first and finished the game with a hat trick. Junior Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) took a corner kick and Lawless headed the ball into the back of the net past the Nighthawks’ senior netminder William McNally (Grafton, Mass.).
Newbury tied the game less than six minutes later on an unassisted goal by freshman Rodriquez Pierre (Somerville, Mass.) The Colonels however regained the lead before the half ended and never looked back. Senior James Dunphy (Hanover, Mass.) scored his first of the season off an assist by freshman Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.). This would be Curry’s second goal off a corner kick. Senior Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J) saw just two shots in the half while McNally made 11 saves to keep his team down by just a goal heading into intermission.
Curry controlled the entire second frame, outshooting Newbury 12-2. Just 46 seconds in, Lawless scored his second goal off an assist by junior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.). The Colonels then went on to score three unanswered before the Nighthawks would get their second and final goal of the game. Lawless tallied two more over the next three along with senior Benjamin Harvitt (Warren, N.J.), who also netted his first goal of the season. All were assisted, with Sadlers helping on two and junior Patrick Dowling (Wrentham, Mass.) on one.
Newbury junior Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) brought the ball almost 30 yards down the field, beating Curry midfielders and defenders and going 1v1 with Newsome for his team’s final goal. The Colonels last score was by freshman Nicolas Chavez-Oramas (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) from sophomore Ethan Wajer (Newcastle, Maine.).
The Nighthawks finished with four total shots, all on net, 12 fouls and no corner kicks. The Colonels finished with 29 shots, 22 on net, 17 fouls and seven corner kicks.
Newsome, who made two saves, earned the win in net for Curry in 82:30 minutes of play. Sophomore James Oliver (Hanover, Mass.) finished out the game but saw zero shots. McNally finished with 16 saves in the loss for Newbury.
The Colonels will travel to Roger Williams on October 1 for a conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. Newbury will host Fisher on Thursday, September 29 with a 3:30 p.m. game start.
