Men's Soccer Shuts Out Husson, 2-0, in Season Opener

Portland, ME – The Husson University men’s soccer team dropped the first game of the 2011 season 2-0 against Curry College in a non-conference neutral site game played at Memorial Field in Portland. With the win, Curry opens their season 1-0 and Husson starts out 0-1 with the loss.

The Eagles fought to a first half draw, and kept the Colonels at bay until 28:49 remained in the second half. Curry broke free when Devin Sadlers (Somersett, Mass.) found the back of the net after Brandon Martins (Attleboro, Mass.) and the visitors got behind Husson keeper Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) to break the scoreless tie.

The Colonels doubled their margin ten minutes later, when another defensive error by the Eagles allowed Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) to break free behind the Husson defense and net Curry’s second goal of the match.

Potter saved 4 of the 6 shots that were directed between the pipes, but the Eagles were out-shot 14-12 in the contest, putting only 25% of those shots on target, and Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) picked up a 3-save shutout in his first game of the season.

The Eagles put up a balanced attack in the game as eight different Husson players took shots in the loss.

Head Coach Jeff Gettler was upset by the result, but not with his team’s effort when he spoke about the game, “I like our team, but I thought the guys came out a little tentative and nervous tonight, while Curry was on the front foot.” He went on to talk about the game his opponents put together against the Eagles, “They really started well and consistently got behind our defense, putting us under pressure too often. We made two errors in the second half that led to two goals. Curry got onto a lot of second balls, playing fast and direct.” There was a sense of hopeful optimism as he discussed this season’s team, “We weren’t able to impress ourselves in the game on either side of the ball tonight. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but I think this team can do a lot of great things this year.”

Coach Gettler’s Eagles return to Bangor for a pair of true home contests this weekend for the Second Annual Husson Classic. They play their first game of the event on Saturday against the University of New England at 5:00 pm, one of four collegiate soccer games scheduled that day on Husson’s Boucher Field. Curry also returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Madison, NJ where they take on Medgar Evers on the campus of Drew University at 5:00 pm.
