Men's Soccer Ties the University of New England 4-4 in Double Overtime

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College tied the University of New England 4-4 in double overtime on Tuesday in Milton.  With the tie Curry improves to 6-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the TCCC.  The Nor’easters improve to 3-7-5 overall and 1-6-1 in the TCCC.

UNE got on the board first just 13 minutes into the game.  Senior Cody Lapointe (Pownal, ME) sent a through ball to freshman Kyle McGlone (Peabody, MA) who shot it past junior goalkeeper Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, NJ).  The Curry defense thought UNE was going to get an offside and hesitated to try and stop Mcglones’ shot. Unfortunately for the Colonels he was not called for offside and the goal remained.

Curry wasted no time in scoring their own goal when they tied the game just five minutes later.  Sophomore Devin Sadlers (Somerset, MA) received a cross ball from sophomore Brandon Martins(Attleboro, MA) and placed it in the top-right corner of the net.  At the 34:02 mark the Colonels took a one-goal lead when freshman Cameron Baer (Epping, NH) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Eric Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, MA).

Curry took a demanding lead in shots during the second half.  The Colonels pressured the Nor’easters defense but solid play from UNE’s goalkeeper senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, ME) kept their team down by just one.  Just 15 minutes into the half and after just their third shot on goal the Nor’easters tied the game.  Sophomore Kevin Tarr (Hermon, ME) collected a loose ball in the 18-year box to score his first goal of the game.

At the 67:18 mark Mcglone scored his second goal of the night after he received a pass from freshman Steve Contestabile (Hilton, NY).  The scored remained at 3-2 in favor of UNE, but with seven minutes left to play Curry tied the game when Gugleilmello headed a ball from Martins into the back of the net.  Just 46 seconds later the Colonels regained the lead when Guglielmello assisted on another goal when freshman Ephesien Simpson (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scored what looked likely to be the game-winner.  The Nor’easters were not finished though as they would tie the game yet again with 2:25 left to play.  Junior Kiel Hiller (Galloway, NJ) got a breakaway and faked out Newsome as he dove left and the ball was placed in the low right corner.

Curry outshot UNE 5-1 in the first overtime and 4-1 1n the second overtime but neither team could score.

The Colonels finished the night with 39 shots and the Nor’easters 15.

Planer finished the day with a high 22 saves.  Newsome made just four saves in the tie.

The Colonels will travel to Western New England College on Saturday, October 23 for an 11:00 a.m. contest. UNE hosts Nichols, October 23 for a 1:00 p.m. game start.
