Men's Soccer Edged by Wentworth 3-2

MILTON, Mass.- Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated Curry College 3-2 on Friday in Milton.  With the win the Leopards improve to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Colonels fall to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the TCCC.

Despite Curry trailing the Leopards by just two shots in the first half, Wentworth had the advantage after 45 minutes of play leading the Colonels 2-0.  The Leopards first goal came at the 15:35 mark when junior Dan Santacroce (Northfield, CT/North Branford) collected the ball right outside the box and placed it perfectly in the corner of the net.  Curry’s goaltender, junior Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, NJ/South Kent) tried to make a diving save but it was too far out of his reach.  Wentworth’s next goal came after a 2v1 situation where senior Jesse Paolella (Portland, ME/Portland) took on senior defender Michael Griffin (Dalton, MA/Wahconha) and made a square pass to senior Elliot Richmond (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) for the score.

Curry came out on fire to start the second half.  The Colonels cut the Leopards lead to just one in the first 1:38 when junior Tim Jarvis (Newbury, MA/Triton) headed the ball into the back of the net from a corner kick taken by sophomore Devin Sadlers (Somerset, MA/Somerset).  Wentworth regained their two goal lead at the 75:08 mark when senior Nick Brown (Somerset, MA/Somerset) crossed the ball to teammate sophomore Jeremy Nasman (Lenox, MA/Lenox Memorial).  The Colonels wouldn’t go away easy though. Just three minutes later freshman Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, MA/Wachusett) capitalized on a rebound from Wentworth’s goaltender senior Brian Pearsall (Sanford, ME/Sanford).  Curry kept putting pressure on the Wentworth defense for the remainder of the game and had two great shots under a minute to play but Pearsall made the saves and the Leopards held out for the 3-2 win.

In net for Wentworth was Pearsall who made 17 saves for the win.  In net for Curry was Newsome who made 10 saves in the loss.

The Colonels will travel to Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday, September 29 for a 4:30 p.m. contest. Wentworth travels to Gordon College on Tuesday September 28 for a 3:30 p.m. game start.
