Newsome Posts First Shutout of Season as Men's Soccer Defeats The Sage Colleges 1-0

Albany, NY----The Sage Colleges hosted Curry College on Tuesday afternoon in the first home men’s soccer game for the Gators. Curry would collect the 1-0 victory to spoil Sage’s debut in front of the home crowd at Albany Academy for Boys. Curry improves to 2-4, while Sage is now 1-4.

Curry’s freshman forward Ephesien Simpson (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) converted a cross from sophomore midfielder Brandon Martins (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) at the 28:26 mark in the first half. The Colonels took a 1-0 lead at the half and despite some strong pressure in the second half, would hold on for the win.

In the final minute of the game, Sage’s freshman Wesley Finch (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) had a blast that was deflected by Curry’s junior keeper Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, NJ/South Kent School) resulting in a Gator corner kick in the final 12 seconds of play.

Newsome collected the shutout victory in goal with his six saves, the first of the season for him. Sage’s freshman Carmen Volpe (Cohoes, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) took the loss after making three saves.

Sage returns to action on Saturday, September 18 hosting Skyline Conference foe, St. Joseph’s College in a 1 p.m. league match, while Curry College hosts Anna Maria at 11:00 a.m. also on Saturday.
