Men's Soccer Falls to TCCC Rival Roger Williams University 4-2

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College lost to Roger Williams University 4-2 on Friday in Milton.  With the win the Hawks improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Colonels fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the TCCC.

Roger Williams took a commanding lead in shots during the first half.  The Hawks outshot the Colonels 12-3 but solid play from junior goalkeeper Brian Newsome(Lawrenceville, NJ) kept the score tied 0-0.  This was Newsome’s first game of the season; he had an injury that kept him from playing in the first four games.   Despite outshooting Curry, Roger Williams had eight offside calls.

Curry closed the gap in shots to begin the half, but it was the Hawks who would get on the bored first.  At the 55:41 mark freshman Brian Swindell (Milford, Mass.) scored after a through pass from teammate junior Josh Boyce (Peabody, Mass.).  That goal started a scoring frenzy for Roger Williams.  Seven minutes after their first goal, the Hawks scored two more within 51 seconds.  Boyce scored after a cross from sophomore Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, CT).  Swindall got control of the ball off the kickoff, dribbled past the Curry defense and made a pass to freshman Dan Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) who placed the ball past Newsome.

Sophomore Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) was awarded his third penalty kick of the season when the Hawks committed a hand ball in the box.  Sadlers scored in the top-right corner of the net at the 74:15 mark to give Curry their first goal of the night.  Roger Williams answered back with their fourth when Swindell scored his second of the game.  The Colonels continued to put pressure on the Hawks keeper and would get one more but Roger Williams held on for the 4-2 win.  Freshman Nathan Tovar (Attleboro, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal after the Hawks goalkeeper, senior Peter Plate (Commack, NY), bobbled the ball in front of the net.

Plate made eight saves in net for Roger Williams earning his team’s first win of the season before leaving the game with an injury. Freshman Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) came in to finish the game but didn’t see a shot.  In net for Curry was Newsome who made 11 saves.

The Colonels travel to The Sage Colleges on Tuesday, September 14 for a 4:00 p.m. game time. Roger Williams will host Wheaton College on Sunday September 12 for a 3:00 p.m. game start.
