Facing the Colonels for the first time since 1996, the Lyons have won their last 20 home openers dating back to 1991. Wheaton's eight goals marked its most since scoring eight against Eastern Connecticut State University in 2002. Curry fell to 1-1 with today's loss.
Moreira moved into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time goals list and fifth in points. Senior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) tallied twice, while classmate and former Providence College three-year player Alex Redding (Newton, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) added a goal and an assist during his Wheaton debut.
Also scoring were senior Tristan Back (London, England/King Alfred School), junior Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) and sophomore Will Nesbitt (Holliston, MA/Holliston). Back and Nesbitt tallied their first collegiate goals. Sophomore David Turina (North Yarmouth, ME/Northfield Mount Hermon School) provided two assists.
Wheaton held advantages of 35-3 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks. The Blue and White's game-winner came off a corner from the right side, as Moreira delivered a right-footed finish on Turina's serve in the 16th minute. Reddy and Turina set Moreira up for the game's second tally 21:24 into play, and the hosts went on to score two more times before the break.
Senior goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) recorded one stop in 68 minutes for the win, while classmate Stefan Viragh (Columbus, OH/Wellington School) went untested the rest of the way.
Curry freshman keeper James Oliver (Hanover, MA/Hanover) turned aside two first-half shots in the loss, while classmate Tyler Daniel (Taunton, MA/Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School) had six saves in the second stanza.
Wheaton concludes its weekend play tomorrow against Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m. Brandeis and Curry will follow at 3:30 p.m.
