Men's Lacrosse Drops CCC Contest at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-5 setback at Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

Graduate student Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) led the Curry offense with a pair of goals and also dished out an assist. Freshman Jack Dacey (Guilford, Conn.) pitched in with two goals while graduate student Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with a goal. Freshman Sawyer Allen (Sutton, Mass.) scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls while freshman goalie Evan Falandys (Leominster, Mass.) made 10 saves against 26 shots.

Western New England scored eight goals in the opening quarter and carried the 8-0 margin into the second quarter. 20 seconds into the second stanza, Stebbins found the back of the net to get the Colonels on the board and to cut the deficit to seven (8-1). The Golden Bears came back with two straight, one from junior Mike Bannon (Edmond, Okla.) and the other from graduate student Nick Gamba (Osterbay, N.Y.) to increase the lead to nine (10-1) with 3:55 to play in the frame. Curry outscored Western New England 2-1 over the final 3:54 of the stanza. Dacey and Stebbins scored for the Colonels while senior Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) netted the final marker of the half for the Golden Bears as the home team carried an 11-3 advantage at the break.

Western New England shut out Curry in the third quarter, 7-0, to stretch the lead to 18-3. The run featured six different goal scorers.

The Colonels put an end to the spurt at the start of the fourth quarter. Dacey netted a tally with 11:41 remaining in regulation while DeLeary scored off an assist from Stebbins to trim the deficit to 13, 18-5. The Golden Bears scored the final three goals of the quarter for the 21-5 final. Gamba finished with four goals and two assists while Bannon added two goals and five assists to lead the Western New England attack. Senior Sean Enright (Montville, N.J.), sophomore Brian Madden (Brookfield, Conn.), senior Jared Newall (Stratford, Conn.), and Tracy produced multi-goal efforts in the contest.

Curry (3-5 overall, 2-2 CCC) will next play at Salve Regina University on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. Western New England (5-1 overall, 3-1 CCC) remains home to host the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
