Wentworth Slips Past Men's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team was edged by the Wentworth Institute of Technology in an 8-7 final on Wednesday night at Sweeney Field.

The Leopards (1-1 overall) took the lead for good with 6:29 remaining in the second quarter en route to their first win of the season. Senior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and junior Nick Gore (Salem, N.H.) scored two goals apiece to lead the way while four others added single tallies. Sophomore Nick Perfetuo (Norwell, Mass.) paced the Colonels (2-1 overall) with three goals on the night.

Neither team led by more than two goals in the first half and Wentworth enjoyed a two-goal cushion at the half, 4-2.

Curry scored first in the opening minutes as Perfetuo found the back of the net for his first tally of the night. Junior Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) tied the game for the Leopards just 52 seconds later, and junior Dane Hanson (East Providence, R.I.) added a score to put the Colonels on top 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Wentworth outscored Curry, 3-0, in the second frame to carry a 4-2 lead into the break. Back-to-back man-up goals by senior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and a marker from Gore highlighted the scoring in the quarter.

The Leopards tacked on three straight goals in the third, one apiece from junior Zach Alexander (Franklin, Mass.), senior Andrew diPalma (West Orange, N.J.), and junior Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) to build a 7-2 advantage for the home squad with 2:23 remaining. The teams traded goals in the final 2:22 to round out the scoring. Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) tallied a man-up goal with 1:17 left while Gore potted an unassisted goal with 17 ticks on the clock to give Wentworth an 8-3 advantage at the end of three.

Curry outscored Wentworth 4-0 in the final 15 minutes. Freshman Pat Modoono (Billerica, Mass.) scored off a feed from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.). DeLeary later tallied his first goal of the contest, coming off an assist from Stebbins. Perfetuo netted the final two markers for the Colonels. The Colonels were unable to find the equalizer as they would fall in the one-goal contest, 8-7.

Junior Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made five saves to earn his first victory of the season. Curry freshman goalie Evan Falandys (Leominster, Mass.) made 18 stops in the setback.

Curry will next host Salve Regina University on Saturday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m. Wentworth returns to action at home against Western New England University on Saturday at noon.
