Late Charge Sends Men's Lacrosse Past Roger Williams in CCC Quarterfinals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The number five seed Curry College men's lacrosse team upended number four seed Roger Williams by a final of 10-8 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels improve to 10-8 on the year while Roger Williams' season ends at 9-8.

Curry opened the contest with two straight goals, one apiece from Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) and Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) to grab a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Colonels tacked on one at the start of the second stanza, thanks to an unassisted tally from Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.). But Roger Williams would respond and embark on a 6-0 run that spanned from the 10:00 mark of the second until 11:02 left in the third. AJ Core (Syosset, N.Y.) and Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.) found the back of the net with unassisted goals to pull within one at 3-2. Max Cammarota (Redding, Conn.) registered a goal off an assist from MacIntyre to tie the game at three going into the halftime break.

The Hawks continued their run at the start of the quarter, scoring three goals over the first 3:58 of the stanza to grab a 6-3 lead. Cammarota scored off an assist from John Lisitano (Guilford, Conn.). Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the net with the assist going to Cammarota and then MacIntyre capped the run with an unassisted goal.

Curry halted the run at the 8:17 mark of the third when Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.) registered a goal off a pass from Wade Prajer (Southbury, Conn.). The goal would be answered right back just 48 seconds later by way of another Cammarota goal, this time off an assist from Eddie Hill (Somers, Conn.).

The Colonels outscored Roger Williams 3-1 over the final six minutes of the third. Serra pulled Curry to within two at 7-5. The reply from the Hawks came at the 4:19 mark when Marzec put a shot past Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) to put the home team back up by three. Goals by MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) and Marcella cut the Hawks' deficit to just one at 8-7 going into the final quarter of action.

Curry went on to shut out Roger Williams in the fourth quarter, 3-0. Serra tied the game at eight with an unassisted goal with 8:34 remaining in regulation. Stebbins gave the Colonels the 9-8 lead with a tally with 6:42 left and then Urbano added an insurance goal to give Curry the 10-8 quarterfinal victory.

Serra paced the Colonels with a hat trick. Urbano, Stebbins and Marcella each had two goals while Cashin closed out the column with one. Cammarota led the Hawks with a hat trick and an assist for four points. Marzec and MacIntyre recorded two goals apiece while Core had one.

O'Brien made 11 saves in 60 minutes in between the pipes to pick up the win for Curry. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) collected 12 saves in 60 minutes of action for Roger Williams.

Curry advances to the CCC Semifinals and will travel to number one seed Endicott on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The loss ends the season for Roger Williams.
