Fast Start Propels Men's Lacrosse Past Anna Maria College, 18-4

PAXTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team captured an 18-4 victory over non-conference opponent Anna Maria College on Thursday night at AMCAT Field. With the win, the Colonels improve to 5-4 overall while the AMCATS fall to 2-5 on the season.

Curry started the contest on a 9-0 run which spanned until the 2:48 mark of the second quarter. The first quarter saw four goals by Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.), two from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.), and one apiece from MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) and Richard Robinson (Dedham, Mass.).

Jack McMenomey (West Linn, Ore.) scored at the 12:34 mark of the second quarter to push the lead to nine to cap the run. Anna Maria got on the board with a goal from Brandon Pavoni (Granby, Mass.) off an assist from Jacob Smith and then followed that with another goal 31 seconds later. The second goal of the stanza came from Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass.) to make it a 9-2 score. The assist on the goal came from Andrew Guinane (Billerica, Mass.). Urbano netted his second goal of the contest on a pass from DeLeary to push the lead back to eight at 10-2 heading into the halftime intermission.

The Colonels continued their strong play and outscored the AMCATS 8-2 in the second half. Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.), McMenomey and DeLeary each scored a goal to ignite a 3-0 run to send the lead back up to 11 at 13-2 with 1:23 left in the third quarter. Hunter LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) stopped the run with a tally with two second remaining in the stanza to make the score 13-3 with one quarter to play.

Curry went on to outscore Anna Maria 5-1 in the fourth quarter to take the contest by an 18-4 final. The five goals came from five different players. Urbano, Newell and Brandon Flaim (Pembroke, Mass.) started the frame with a 3-0 run. Pavoni scored for the AMCATS to tally their final goal of the afternoon at the 8:26 mark. Robinson and Grant Callanan (Tewksbury, Mass.) each found the net once in the final 5:18 of regulation to close out the game scoring.

DeLeary (three goals, two assists) and Serra (four goals, one assist) finished with five points apiece to lead the way for the Colonels. Flaim, Newell and Urbano pitched in four points each while Marcella finished with three. Newell paced Curry with four groundballs.

Pavoni led the way for Anna Maria with three points on two goals and an assist. Rockwal and LaRochelle each tallied a goal for the AMCATS to close the scoring. Tre Demers (Granby, Mass.) led the way for the home team in the groundball category, picking up four in the loss.

Josh Teller picked up the win in the cage for the Colonels. He made eight saves in 51:34 of action. Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) was credited with the loss, stopping 22 shots in 60 minutes of play.

Curry will return to the field on Saturday for a CCC road contest at Nichols at 2:00 p.m. Anna Maria will next play Saturday at home for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff against Becker.
