Men's Lacrosse Edged by Visiting Gordon College, 9-8

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College lost to Commonwealth Coast Conference visitor Gordon College, 9-8, on Tuesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  The Colonels fell to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the CCC while the Scots improved to 5-8 and 2-3 in the conference.

Senior Ronald Jensen and sophomore John McMenomey led the Colonels with two goals apiece. Freshman Jeffery Yates contributed a goal and chipped in with two assists. Sophomore Brandon Flaim and freshmen Matt Serra and Cole Franklin each netted one.

For the Fighting Scots, junior Ryan Utz tallied four goals. Junior Jake Martin led the his team in the assist column with three while netting a goal. Junior Michael Utz recorded three points on two scores and an assist.

Gordon was first to get on the board at 14:15 on a goal from Ryan Utz off an assist by Michael Utz. The Scots added a second goal at 11:34 from freshman Own Geis assisted by freshman Nico Manhaniello to take a 2-0 advantage. Curry was quick to tie the game after responding with two unassisted goals from Franklin and Flaim as the first period ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Colonels would take the lead at 11:45 of the second period off a tally from McMenomey assisted by Yates. The Scots answered back with three unanswered goals. Two of their tallies came from Ryan Utz.  One was in a man-up situation and anothr a man-down goal from Michael Utz with just six seconds left in the first half to give Gordon a 5-3 edge heading into break.

Curry once again would tie the game early in the third period with two nets coming in the opening seven minutes.  The Colonels scores came off the sticks of freshman Matt Serra and Jensen. The Scots regained the lead with just over a minute left in the third period when Michael Utz netted his second of the game.

Curry would start the final period with two quick goals in the first two minutes from Yates and Jensen. Gordon responded with the tying goal, a man-up from Ryan Utz with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. At 6:53 the Colonels got an unassisted tally from McMenomey for a one-goal advantage. The advatange didn't last long though as the Scots responded with a goal from senior Jordan Heckelmann to evan the game, 8-8. With 55 seconds showing on the clock, Gordon't Martin registered the game-winner.

Curry outshot Gordon 40-39 while the Scots held a 26-24 groundball advantage. The Colonels went 9-21 on face-offs and 14-20 on clears. The Scots were successful on 11 of 14 clears and won 12 out of the 21 face-offs.

Curry's sophomore goaltender Shane O'Brien made 16 saves in the loss. Gordon's junior goaltented Cody Greenwald turned away 14 shots for the win.

The Colonels are next in action on Saturday when they host Western New England at home with a start time of 12:00 pm. The Fighting Scots will be in action next Wednesday when they face Endicott at home starting at 7:00 pm.
