PURCHASE, N.Y. – Curry College defeated Manhattanville, 6-5 in OT on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Brandon Flaim scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner with just 0:53 remaining, leading the Curry Colonels to a 6-5 (OT) win over the Valiants.
After exchanging opportunities throughout the first quarter, it was the Colonels who got on the board first. With 4:04 remaining, junior midfielder Joseph Shea scored his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, giving Curry a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Ed Motherway scored his first goal of the season with just 1:26 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman Christian Flores picked up his third assist of the season on the play and is now averaging an assist per game in his young collegiate career.
The Valiants took a 2-1 lead at the 12:23 mark of the second quarter when Morrissey buried his first goal of the game off an assist from fellow sophomore, Andrew Murray. Morrissey extended the Valiants lead to two when he scored again with just 1:56 remaining in the first half.
Hoffman continued making big saves in goal for the Valiants but the Colonels eventually drew a little closer when John McNemoney scored his sixth goal of the season for the Colonels. Andrew Murray answered back quickly for Manhattanville, scoring his fourth goal of the season just over a minute later.
McNemoney picked up his second goal of the game with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter. Just 22 seconds later McNemoney completed his hat trick, scoring off the faceoff from his previous goal to tie the game at four.
Manhattanville took the lead with 8:10 remaining when sophomore Connor Normandin setup Morrissey's third goal of the game. Curry battled back and recorded the next three shots on goal, the third shot got past Hoffman, tying the game 5-5 with 6:40 remaining in the game.
60 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner so the teams headed to overtime. Manhattanville recorded the first three shots of overtime but Curry countered quickly off a Valiants turnover and an impressive goal from Flaim handed Manhattanville its second loss of the season.
The Valiants head to Newburgh, N.Y. on Wednesday to faceoff against a 3-2, Mount St. Mary team that is averaging over 10 goals per game this season. The Colonels host Wheaton College on Wednesday in a 3:00 p.m. match-up. (Game Recap Courtesy of Manhattanville Sports Information)
