Men's Lacrosse Captures 3rd Annual Frostbite Classic Defeating Mount Ida 8-5

MILTON, Mass. –Curry College defeated visiting Mount Ida, 8-5, in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels and Mustangs were participating in the 3rd Annual Frostbite Classic, with Curry taking home the trophy for the third year in a row.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-0 overall.  The Mustangs fell to 1-2.

Curry was the first to get on the board in the first quarter with junior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.).  Natale was assisted by sophomore Connor Arnold (Clifton Park, N.Y.).  Mount Ida scored the last two goals of the quarter with less than one minute remaining to play.  The goals were scored just 24 seconds apart from each other.  Junior Gilson Fernandes (Saugus, Mass.) scored both goals for the Mustangs which were unassisted. 

The Colonels outscored the Mustangs 3-0 in the second quarter with senior Michael Hibbard (Chelmsford, Mass.) making five saves to hold Mount Ida scoreless.  Freshman John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) scored at the 13:17 mark off an assist by sophomore Harrison Foster (Saddle River, N.J.).  Freshman Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) scored the team’s third goal when Castellano saw him open in front of the net.  The final goal for the Colonels happened with just nine seconds left before the end of the half.  Senior Russell Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) earned his first goal of the season off Castellano’s second assist on the day.  First half shots were in favor of Mount Ida.  The Mustangs outshot the Colonels 17-12. 

Curry came out in the second half strong, scoring 13:12 into the frame.  Senior Sean Gallagher (Topsfield, Mass.) earned his first point of the year with an assist by Lanham.  Mount Ida went on to score three goals before the Colonels would finish the third period with another of their own.  The Mustangs got goals from Senior Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, Minn.), Fernandes, his third of the game, and freshman Michael Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.).  All three scores were unassisted.  Castellano, who led the team with five points, scored the final goal of the period and eventual game-winner from an assist by Gallagher. 

Hibbard made 10 saves in the fourth and final quarter to keep the Mustangs with just five goals.  Mount Ida had 15 shots alone in the frame, but couldn’t find the back of the net.  Curry pulled away for the win scoring two more goals for the 8-5 victory.  Both Lanham and Jensen scored their second goals of the game.  Castellano earned his fifth point assisting on Jensen’s goal.

Mount Ida led with 40 shots on the day, while Curry had 27.  The Mustangs had 38 groundballs with the Colonels scooping up 30.  Mount Ida went 10-17 on face-offs and Curry 7-17. 

Hibbard made 20 saves in goal for his first win of the season.  Senior James McAllister (Smithfield, R.I.) took the loss for Mount Ida, making 11 saves.
