Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up 16-9 at TCCC Rival Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Freshman Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) scored four goals and senior Blair Kelley (Lee, N.H.) had a goal and two assists as the Salve Regina University men’s lacrosse team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Curry College 16-9 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Saturday afternoon at Gaudet Field.

Junior Chris Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Braun (Commack, N.Y.) each picked up a hat trick for the Seahawks (4-2, 1-0 TCCC), who ran their win streak to four games while evening the all-time series with the Colonels (3-3, 0-2 TCCC) at seven wins apiece.

Curry led 4-3 after one quarter of play behind a pair of goals by sophomore Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.) and some solid goaltending by junior Michael Hibbard (North Chelmsford, Mass.). The Colonels stretched their lead to 6-3 early in the second quarter before goals from senior Sam Barnum (Holderness, N.H.) and Walker cut the SRU deficit to 6-5 entering the half. Salve Regina held a 21-18 edge in shots through two quarters and was 14-of-18 on clears, compared to 10-for-20 clear attempts for the visitors.

Salve Regina took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring five times to grab a 10-7 lead. Hollenshade netted a pair of goals while Kelley, senior Evan Gates (Ridge, N.J.), and freshman Donovan Kelley (Lee, N.H.) each tallied once. Hollenshade and Braun each scored to start the fourth to push the SRU lead to 12-7. Later in the quarter, they reeled off four-consecutive goals – including a pair by junior Brendan Carroll (Garden City, N.Y.) – to seal the win.

Senior Brett Pimental (East Falmouth, Mass.) improved to 4-1 in net as he stopped 14 Curry shots. Hibbard finished with 14 saves. Blair Kelly and senior Maurie Fitzgerald (Lexington, Mass.) each racked up eight ground balls for SRU while seniors Kyle Abbott (Ashland, Mass.) and Drew Ligas (Cranford, N.J.) each collected five for Curry.

The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday night when they welcome Endicott to town for a 7 p.m. game at Gaudet Field. The Colonels travel to Roger Williams for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday.
